A variety of day care facilities are also listed in the local yellow pages under "Day Nurseries".

TRANSPORTATION

District 47 jointly operates its transportation department with the local high school district. The schools maintain buses for both regular and special education programs. Bus service is provided if students live a mile and one half or more from school.

LUNCH PROGRAM

Nutritious hot lunches are sold in each of our cafeterias daily at reasonable prices in conjunction with the National School Lunch Program.

Students who bring a sack lunch from home may purchase milk or snacks in our cafeterias.

BOOK FEES

Illinois is one of many states that offset the cost of education by annually collecting textbook rental and student material fees from the parents of students. School districts in Illinois are authorized by law to charge fees for such items as textbooks, workbooks, and other consumable learning materials.

Provisions are made for those families who cannot afford these fees due to low income or financial emergencies. Contact our business office to apply for a fee waiver.

IMMUNIZATIONS & PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS

State law requires that all students be immunized against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles and rubella. The only exceptions made are for religious convictions. Also, all pupils entering our schools for the first time must file a health examination. Another health exam is required again at the beginning of fifth grade.

Proof of immunization or physical exams are due prior to the first day of school (within 30 days for move-ins). This law applies to all out-of-state pupils regardless of grade level.

STANDARDIZED TESTING

Each year state and nationally normed tests are administered to students in certain grades. Subjects tested include reading, language, mathematics, spelling, social studies and science.

Illinois law requires that students in grades 3, 5 and 8 be tested in the spring in the subjects of mathematics, reading and writing. Grades 4 and 7 are tested in the subjects of science and social studies.

Thanks to the fine efforts of our students, parents, and teachers, District 47 students continually score well above state and national averages.

TORNADO PROCEDURES

Our schools are linked by radio to the Civil Defense & Weatherwatch Network. When we receive a tornado watch message, classes continue as normal.

In the case of a tornado warning, all pupils and staff are moved to emergency locations within the school. If a warning transcends the after school dismissal time, all students are kept at the emergency location and school buses do not run until after the warning has expired. Pupils will only be dismissed to the direct custody of a parent or guardian.

Our school buses are equipped with radios and drivers are trained in tornado warning procedures.

WINTER WEATHER

A large number of working parents coupled with a complex transportation system typically prompts only an "on or off" operation of our schools. Accordingly, late starts or early dismissals due to weather typically do not occur.

The decision to close schools due to severe weather is usually a joint decision by the superintendents of District 155 and District 47 in conjunction with our Transportation Director and is usually reached by 6:00 AM. Local and Chicago area radio stations are immediately contacted. They in turn have agreed to broadcast such closings.

Please listen to area radio stations instead of calling individual schools for such emergency bulletins.

Snow days, when school is closed, are then added to the end of the school year in June.
